Elementary Report Card Information

The updated Elementary Report Card was deveolped to better communicate student progress in relation to identified standards.

What is a Standards-Aligned Report Card?

Our new report cards focus on clear, objective descriptions of student learning, with less written narrative. A standards-aligned system measures student progress against established learning standards—not against other students.

Why the Change to a Standards-Aligned Report Card?

This change reflects our goal of more clearly communicating what students are expected to know and be able to do. The new report card uses language aligned with these standards to highlight the key skills and content students are developing across academic and social areas. It also helps students and families better understand learning expectations and progress.

How Will Student Progress Be Reported in the Academic Areas?

Our report card uses academic performance descriptors that are observable and objective. The performance descriptors are based on the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards, and reflect what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. They serve as a basis for our curriculum, instruction and assessment. Student evaluation will continue to be reported using a numeric scale (3, 2, 1):

  • 3 – Demonstrating grade-level understanding and applying skills independently: Students who receive a 3 are meeting the expectation and are demonstrating a level of understanding that is typically/ appropriately expected at this time in the school year.
  • 2 – Progressing toward grade-level understanding and needs support to apply skills: Students who receive a 2 are currently progressing toward an expectation and may require regular support, monitoring, and/or assistance from an adult or clarification in order to progress.
  • 1 – Beginning to develop understanding and needs intensive support to apply skills: Students receiving a 1 are currently acquiring prerequisite skills in order to understand the content and/or apply the skills of the expected standard. Students need additional adult assistance, increased time, and/or alternative strategies for gaining foundational skills that will lead to grade level standards.
  • NA – Not addressed at this time: When an N/A appears next to a descriptor, it means that this was not addressed during the months leading up to the reporting period. Some standards will be addressed during a specific portion of the year, while others will be addressed throughout the year.

How will student progress be reported for Behaviors that Promote Learning?

Individual learner behaviors, social and emotional skills will be reported by the teacher to ensure that parents are informed of their child’s attitudes and dispositions toward learning skills.

These skills will be reported using the following key:

  • C – Consistently Meets Expectations
  • I – Inconsistently Meets Expectations
  • N – Needs Support Meeting Expectations

Why are not all standards listed on the report card?

A standards-aligned report card is not the same as a standard/learning outcome listing. Teams of teachers and administrators reviewed the Common Core Learning Standards for each grade level and chose descriptors which were considered most essential for student learning in each grade level.
