High school students enter the competition by taking the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screen of about 1.6 million entrants each year. The nationwide pool of finalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
