Three Greenfield Elementary teachers, as members of the school’s Home School Association (HSA), have joined together to bring the popular 5K run/walk back to the school.
The Dragonfire 5K Run/Walk will take place Saturday, Oct. 14 at Greenfield Elementary School beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event was held yearly since 2009 but in 2020 the pandemic shut that and most school community events down.
“As teachers, we wanted to do something to help bring back this important event to tie our school and its families to the community,” said Third Grade Teacher Suzanne Hausam. The event will benefit the HSA, the parent teacher association that plans extra cultural and educational enrichment programs. The Dragonfire 5K will also help the Greenfield Food Pantry, as participants are asked to bring food donations.
Hausam, along with Second Grade Teachers Pam Cooper and Kerri Guthrie, decided to team up and bring this event back because post-COVID, many of the events that once made the school community thrive are inadvertently still on hold. “Many of our parents are new and were not around when events like this took place,” Hausam said. We can’t wait to show them and grow the interest and enthusiasm for bringing more family events back.”
In the past, the challenging, hilly course attracted approximately 100 participants each year. Registration, route information and sponsorship opportunities for local businesses can be found at www.dragonfire5K.com.
A children’s 1K Fun Run will take place at 8:30 a.m. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. The event takes place at Greenfield Elementary School, 3180 Route 9N
