162 - Media Literacy                      6 Credits

Instructor: Nicole Karas

A timely topic that can fit in every age group and be targeted to any subject area.  You can use Media Literacy to teach kids to analyze media and become smart media consumers.  The lesson(s) you create will target your particular subject area and curriculum.  In this class you will learn about Media Literacy, experience a multimedia presentation and then create one for your particular class including handouts and assessments.  Media Literacy can be inserted as a standalone lesson, a week long plan or longer.  You can cater the structure to your particular class and technology skills, and it can be presented in a low tech or high tech format.  This class will teach you the background and history of Media Literacy and give you time to generate usable curriculum specifically for your classes.

169 Differentiating Instruction with Technology

Instructor:  Carol Godette

One of our 7 power standards is Vocabulary Development.  Using Wordly Wise 3000 I will demonstrate on a Smartboard how auditory learners can learn vocabulary (through the website) and show how you can use this with your class.  Research supports that a student must use a word at least 12 times for it to "become their own." This course will show how to develop flip cards for each of the words on edhelper.com.  We will then discuss the six traits of writing (voice, word choice, sentence fluency, etc.)  You will be given the opportunity to choose a piece of literature to develop a tiered lesson on the writing trait of your choice using literature provided.  We will be using the award winning site Writingfix.com which I will guide teachers through using the Smartboard.
