Grant Writing to Support Service Learning
The cutting edge educational methodology for connecting your school system (students, teachers, and administrators) with local, state, national, and global needs and issues is Service Learning. This grant-eligible teaching model empowers a school system to unite classroom and community.
Working with local leaders and agencies, and under the supervision of the NYSED Statewide Service Learning Coordinator’s office, teachers will have access to the basic elements of service learning, current and innovative classroom applications, resources, materials, curricula and funding, and have opportunity for future service learning professional development.
Topics discussed in this course also include the basic structural elements of grant writing: determining the time frame; curriculum integration; grant blending articulation; building the team; funding integration; creating effective evaluation instruments; and project sustainability.
Consider how standards based service learning can make a positive difference in your school system and community, while teachers and students learn the basic tools of grant development. For information, contact GCRTC Grants Coordinator, Vickie Parker, vickie@teachercenter.org

El Día de los Muertos, (Nov 1st, 2009), coinciding with All
Saints Day and All Souls Day, is celebrated in parts of Mexico
and other areas of Latin America, as well as some major US
cities. This ritual that seems to mock death has been practiced
by indigenous people for thousands of years. In rural Mexico,
many people visit the cemetery where their loved ones are
buried. They decorate gravesites with marigold flowers and
candles. They bring gifts for the dead and eat the favorite food
of their loved ones.
Studying El Día de los Muertos and integrating it into the LOTE
and art curriculum, gives children a glimpse into the culture of
Mexico, Guatemala, and other Spanish -speaking countries. This
workshop will be conducted in English and is especially
appropriate for Spanish, art, social studies and 5th
grade teachers. The workshop will include background
information about El Día de los Muertos, as well as hands-on
activities such as making of sugar skulls, papel picado
(intricately cut tissue paper which can be found hanging on the
streets during most Mexican celebrations), and a Guatemalan
kite. In addition, there will be at least one children's story
about the Day of the Dead modified for vocabulary teaching for
any language level.

Summer Retreat
On August 23-25, 2010 (Mon-Wed), participants will gather at the Rensselaerville Institute and spend three days creating original artwork and developing materials that include 21st Century Skills, both digital and traditional, for their classrooms.
Developed especially for art teachers, this retreat will
allow the participants to immerse themselves in their
artwork, either traditional or digital medium, share in
group critiques and look at ways to strengthen the activity
for the classroom. This year we will focus on the 21st
Century Skills, what is already being done and how better to
embed them in curricula. Participants will be given the
opportunity to observe, investigate, explore and link to
technology with the intent to see how digital media may
enhance and strengthen instructional strategies.
Participants will have access to the Internet to locate resources; access to film and flatbed scanners to input materials; use of digital cameras for the making and recording of artwork; and access to CD burners to store materials. Technical assistance will be ongoing to be sure teachers are not derailed because of computer problems.
For Technology Curriculum Writing, participants should bring ideas for lesson plans and any materials they need to develop them participants should have basic computer skills.
For Art Making, participants should bring the medium of your choice.
There will be ample time for working on your own artwork
as well as networking with others about artwork and 21st
Century Skills applications. Join your colleagues to discuss
your work and digital possibilities.
