301  Kurzweil Training Part I                      Instructor:                      3 credits     

                                  

This is a general hands-on training on the use of Kurzweil. Kurzweil turns text into a variety of life-like voices. Users can bookmark, make notes, skim or summarize text to aid mastery of concepts and details. They can modify reading speed, pitch, and emphasis to suit specific preferences and purposes. They can edit or create documents assisted by an audible dictionary, thesaurus or prioritized spell checker, and archive them using a simple file management dialog.

303  CSE Meetings:  What's a Regular Education Teacher To Do

Instructors:  Pupil Services Staff                        2 Credits

 

Federal and State regulations require that a regular education teacher of a student with a disability attend their committee on Special Education meetings, have access to their individual Education Plans and participate in the development of the IEP.  Training and information are needed to help teachers participate effectively in this process.  This session will prepare regular education teachers for CSE meetings---the information that should be brought to the meeting and the questions that might be asked.  The parts of the regulations that relate to the regular education teacher will be summarized and explained.  Sample forms will be provided to help teachers prepare for meetings.  Common problems that may occur in CSEs and ways to facilitate productive CSE meetings will be discussed.

304  The Special Education Consultant Teacher:  Models of Service Delivery

Instructor:  Karen Peper, Campbell House Associates                  2 Credits

 

Consultant teacher (CT services are provided to many K-12 students with disabilities in the district).  Examples of CT models, respective staff roles and the most common issues that occur when providing this service will be discussed.  Participants will be given a packet of sample lessons and resources.  This session is highly recommended for any teacher involved in consultant teaching this or next year.  It will be presented by a local expert.

305  IEP Writing                         Instructors:  Pupil Services Staff

 

Staff responsible for developing mandated individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities will receive training tailored to meet their experience, assignment and student caseload.  Interactive instruction will be based on actual IEPs of the participants' students.

306  Course Number 504                Instructors:  Pupil Services Staff

 

Course Number 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act must be followed in many settings including schools.  In order to develop and implement a 504 plan for an eligible student, school staff must understand the requirements, process and possible accommodations that students may receive.  This interactive workshop will provide school staff with information to develop actual 504 plans.  Participants are encouraged to bring information to develop a specific plan.  Participants will be provided with samples of model plans, a resource packet and access to various reference texts.

1.  Developing legally defensible IEP's for the annual review meeting upcoming for 2008-2009
2.  Ensuring proper data input for state reporting purposes
3. Review of process and procedures for special education compliance

Discussion of the challenges and benefits for both students and staff will follow. Participants will leave with strategies and ideas for using multiple adults in the same instructional setting.

Information is appropriate for K-12 staff who had not attended the spring co-teaching trainings.

This session will provide an overview of the most common disabilities likely present in today’s classroom. Rapidly increasing numbers of children are diagnosed on the Autistic Spectrum. This session will provide an overview of the disabilities within the Autistic Spectrum including Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Strategies for success will be included.
