701 A Day in Saratoga, 1884      

 Instructors: Charlie Kuenzel & Dave Patterson     2 credits

 

This two hour walking tour will take participants on a "time travel" journey to life in Saratoga Springs for a visitor to the community in 1884.  Included in the tour will be the great hotels, the menus, the train station, the "cure", the mineral baths and waters, activities that would make up a day in Saratoga Springs in 1884.  The tour will begin in Congress Park in front of the Canfield Casino.  Bring your walking shoes and your imagination.  To get the most out of this tour you are encouraged to take the Introductory courses on the Springs of Saratoga and the History of Saratoga prior to this tour.

704 The Structures, the Stories and the Springs

A revised look at the architecture, history and the springs of Saratoga.  This walking tour will start at the historic High Rock Spring, and walk to many familiar sites in the downtown Saratoga area.  A great overview course for all teachers especially 4th grade teachers preparing for their local history unit.

705 The Parks of Saratoga (20th Century)

This three hour course will be a walking/driving tour of Saratoga Springs development throughout the 20th century.  This course will include information on how the springs were endangered early in the 20th century and then saved and how downtown Saratoga Springs was endangered in the mid 20th century and went through a rebirth in the 1960s and '70s.  This tour will begin in Congress Park and continue on to Broadway and conclude in the Saratoga State Park.

An overview of horse racing in Saratoga and it's impact on the City.  This course includes a walking tour of the historic Sartoga Race Course, Horse Haven, the Fasig Tipton Sales Pavillion, and historic houses on Union Avenue from the glory days of racing.

The early morning start of 7:00 AM is designed to allow participants to view the "Morning Workouts: of thoroughbreds on the main track as well as the general tour on the track, Horse Haven, and the Fasig Tipton Sales Pavillion.  Please feel free to bring breakfast items if you would like to have "Breakfast at the Track" in a clubhouse box.

720 "History from the Grave:  A walk through Greenridge Cemetery"

   Instructors:  Charlie Kuenzel, Dave Patterson      2 Credits

 

Classroom teachers will be able to research the may prominent and influential people of early Saratoga using primary sources.  Greenridge Cemetery was the second cemetery in Saratoga but by far is the final resting place for most of the "founding fathers of Saratoga". Many prominent family plots will be visited and discussed as to their role in early Saratoga development.  As usual we will discuss the application to the classroom and modification for grade level.

750 Sounds in Motion

     Instructor:  PJ Chilton                                        2 Credits

 

SIM is a phonemic awareness program.  Each phoneme is paired with a gross motor movement, which was developed based on the acoustic features of each sound.  The program addresses letter-sound awareness, association, discrimination, blending, segmenting, substituting and rhyming.  It incorporates writing, movement, and exploration with sounds and words.

752  Fill your Bucket with Character Education 

Instructor:  Madeline Daley, RN, MS                                             6 credits

This will be a fun workshop to compliment the new books you received for Character Education. This workshop will provide you an opportunity to complete your six hours of continuing education for the 2008-2009 academic year. This workshop will allow you time to get your classroom ready for September and to network with other colleagues. Please sign up early and bring a friend, class size is limited. There will be a book raffle for each class.

If the following dates do not meet your needs additional classes can be scheduled for a minimum of 6-8 participants.

Start the year off on the right track; make sure your bucket is filled first.  Learn how to foster a fun and positive work/learning environment.  In preparation for this course participants will need to read Chapter’s 1-5 of the Educator’s Version of “How Full Is Your Bucket”.  A copy of the book can be borrowed through Staff Development. This workshop will provide an opportunity to get a jump start on preparing your classroom for the return of your students.
