Dear Parents/Guardians:

It appears that Spring may finally be here, and with it, so is the fourth quarter marking period.  This marking period goes by very quickly, and June will be here soon.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress, I strongly encourage you to contact your child’s teachers immediately.

The end of the year schedule will be developed shortly.  It will be mailed home in May with the five-week progress reports.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that the use of cell phones and other electronic devices, including

i-Pods and MP3 players, are not allowed during the school day.  Recently, reminders have been given to all students during the morning announcements that cell phones, i-Pods and MP3 players must be locked up in their school lockers.  Having these devices out during the school day is a violation of the school district’s Code of Conduct and the middle school’s discipline code.  Please be aware that if these items are seen or heard during the school day, they will be confiscated, and depending on the situation, other disciplinary action may be taken.  I strongly recommend that students keep these items locked in their school lockers during the day.  As always, students who need to call home may do so by going to their House Office or the Main Office to use the phone.  If you need to get a message to your child, you may do so by calling the school and requesting a message be given to your child.  I would like to thank you in advance for your help and cooperation.

Please review with your child the middle school’s dress code.  Students are continuing to wear clothing that is inappropriate for school.  Short shorts and skirts, tops with spaghetti straps, pajamas and slippers are unsuitable for school attire.  Thank you for your help and assistance with this matter.

Parents and community members are invited to visit Maple Avenue Middle School during Education Week, May 5 through May 9, 2008.  Special activities include many displays of student artwork, opportunities to visit Family and Consumer Science classroom demonstrations, and instrumental music rehearsals during the day and after school.  Please call ahead for additional information if you are interested in observing any of these activities or visiting the building.

A group of Maple Avenue students, under the direction of the technology teachers and with advice and guidance from Bateaux Below, Inc. staff, is constructing a 30 foot long replica of an 18th century bateau naval ship used on Lake George during the French and Indian War.  The Bateaux Below group is responsible for sites both above and below the waters of Lake George being recognized as national historic sites.  The model will be on display outside the technology classrooms during Education Week for those who would like to stop by and see it.  After completion, the model will be on display on Lake George, near the Lake George Visitor Center.

The 2007-2008 school year has seen the opening of the Maple Avenue Middle School’s formal art gallery.  At any given time, hundreds of pieces of student artwork are displayed in our two front hallways.  Please stop in, especially during Saratoga Education Week, to take an enjoyable Art Walk.

The eighth graders’ next State Assessment will be science.  The written portion of the exam will be given on Tuesday, May 6th. The sixth and seventh graders will also be taking the written portion of the local social studies exam on May 6th.  Listed below you will find important dates of school and other State exams to be given this spring:

On Tuesday, June 3rd, our orientation meeting for parents of incoming fifth graders will take place in the Trombley Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.  The dates of other upcoming events are shown below.

Many thanks to those of you who have signed up at Hannaford, Target and other businesses who make contributions to your child’s school.  These gifts are given to the PTSO, who actively and financially support a large number of cultural arts activities at school.

The PTSO is having a “Buy One, Get One Free” Scholastic Book Fair in May.  Look for more information to come home with your child.

As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 587-4551.
