Edline:  Adding Information by Hand or Uploading Existing Files

News, Calendar, and Content items all allow you to enter text by hand or to upload existing documents such as those you create in MSWord, Excel, and PowerPoint.

1.

a. To type text yourself, click Enter Text By Hand.  A word processing box appears as in 2 below.

b. If you wish to upload a document you have already created choose the Import an existing file link.  Go to 3 below for this.

2.

a. A simple word processing box appears for typing your message or information.  This is the same box that appears for calendar items, content, and news items and works like any word processor.  The buttons on the top menus allow you a great deal of flexibility in formatting.  See the key and information below for more details.

Note:  There is no spell checker here.  A useful technique is to type the text in MS-Word so you can take advantage of spell checking and then simply copy and paste your text into this box from Word once you have it the way you like it.   Another advantage is that you can then save the word document and have a backup and/or record of your news or content.

b. You can also add a link to your item in the Link to the following URL box.

c. You can add an image to your item from your hard drive using the Upload Image box.  Browse to locate the image and add it.

Key To Text Box Formatting Buttons

  • Hopefully most of the formatting buttons are familiar from other word processing experiences.

  • Hold the cursor over any button for a few seconds and a descriptive label will appear.

  • Descriptions of some less familiar or distinctive buttons . . .

Preview  the material as it will appear on your page.

Edit HTML Source (for those familiar with HTML web page formatting)

Ordered list -- number a list of items

Unordered list -- places bullets in front of each list item

 Outdent & Indent highlighted text

Insert/edit link -- make highlighted (selected) text a hyperlink to a web page

Unlink -- remove a web hyperlink in highlighted (selected) text

3.

The Import Existing File box appears instead of the word processing box when you click the Import an existing file link.

a. Click Browse to open the familiar Choose file box.  Locate the file you wish to upload, and double click it.

b. The file name (with complete location information) will appear in the Import Existing File box.

c. Click the Import link and let the file upload.

The Upload a web document option is an advanced option for users with a reasonable understanding of zip files and web documents.

This tutorial is specific to using methods available to add information to Edline’s Calendar, Content, and News items.  Remember that there are other options and bits of information also needed on those pages to make complete entries.
