THEME: The theme of a literary work is an insight about life or human nature that the writer presents to the reader.

ROMEO AND JULIET explores the following themes:

  • FATE -  There are forces in life over which people have no control.

    • Shakespeare portrays Romeo and Juliet as "star-crossed lovers," doomed by fate to a tragic end. Do you agree that they were victims of fate or do you think they suffered the results of their own bad choices? Give at least 3 examples from the play which support your opinion.
    • Do you believe in fate? Explain why or why not.

  • SECRECY -  Even well-intended deceptions and secrets can be destructive.

    • Are there any adult characters in the play who might be more responsible for the play's outcome than Romeo and Juliet? How does secrecy play a role?
    • Discuss some of the consequences of Romeo and Juliet's decision to marry in secret. Explain whether you think they should have married.
    • What other story ended up very badly for the main character due to her being deceptive?

  • REVENGE -  Revenge can destroy both avenger and victim.
    • Can you think of any instances in our modern day where revenge has played a big role in destroying people's lives?
    • Revenge is a very real, very raw emotion. Why do you think most human beings have felt this emotion at times?
    • There is a saying: "Revenge is sweet." Why do you think this seems so true?
    • Give two examples in literature that you've read this year that deal with the theme of revenge.

  • LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT -  At times, young people have more passion than wisdom, while older people forget the power of love.

    • How do you feel about the speed with which Romeo and Juliet fall in love?
    • Do you believe that love at first sight is possible?
