Vocabulary
"Just outside music it lay, with a cadence not like theirs."

Understanding the literal meaning of the text can be problematic for high school students in two ways:

  • First, there are those words, which may be or may not be already in the reader's lexicon. Sometimes the context will provide enough of a clue for the meaning to be discerned, while at other times, it may remain uncertain. For this reason, each student needs to know the basic vocabulary list for Beloved. This list will help him/her to glean the literal meaning of the text.

Required Vocabulary List (The list of words you need to know for the basic comprehension of the story.)

  • Second, there are those words, which are so directly connected to the language of the time that they can create a problem for the reader. These words require outside knowledge of history, religion, science, etc. Investigating the origins and meanings of these words will enrich the reader's understanding of the text and his/her understanding of the world in general.

Collecting Data Vocabulary Task (An assignment that will help you to better understand the wide range of words related to the setting of Beloved.)
