Course Description
Objectives: English Academic Intervention Services instruction is designed to meet the needs of the individual student. The New York State ELA 8 or the Comprehensive English Regents exam as well as informal assessment by the teacher will be used to identify each student's strengths and weaknesses in reading comprehension and composition skills. The student will participate in small group activities and receive prescribed assignments designed to capitalize upon his/her strengths and to help develop those skills which need improvement.
Procedure: The student's instructional program will be kept in his/her individual work folder in the classroom. The folder will contain a detailed description of his/her assignments based on a variety of instructional materials. The student will be asked to participate in lessons specifically designed to prepare him/her for the ELA 8 or the English Regents. Following the completion of small group instruction within the lesson, the student will work independently on individualized assignments. The teacher can assist with assignments from the student's regular classes if needed.
Evaluation: The quarter grade of Pass or Fail is determined by the average of grades received for individual assignments. The AIS teacher will ask the student's regular English classroom teacher to complete progress reports once every marking period. In addition to interim reports and report cards, the student's parents or guardians will receive an enrollment notification letter and quarterly progress reports. At the end of a semester, after consultation with the regular classroom teacher and the parent or guardian, a student may be advised to continue in the course for another semester.
Absences: If a student is absent from class, he/she is responsible for the work completed during that time. He/she may be asked to complete the assignment that was missed for homework.
