Sources

Minimum requirement: four sources-you must use at least four sources, which consist of books plus database articles. Unless you use the entire book, you must photocopy or print out your sources, and place them in the back pocket of your research folder.

You will probably need more than four sources to do a good job on this project, particularly if your sources repeat information, are short, or contain limited information on your particular research question. In some cases, with prior approval, other types of sources may be used to satisfy the required four sources.

If you are having trouble finding enough or relevant information, first ask our librarian, Mrs. Brennan, for help. Then, if you are still stuck, see me. If we cannot find at least four good sources that help answer your research question, you may need to adjust your question or change your topic altogether.

In some cases, other types of sources may be appropriate such as expert interviews, original documents, public records, or original experiments. If you think any of these might apply to your research, see me!

You will also be allowed to use pre-approved internet sources, but they will not count towards the four source requirement. For internet sites, you must fill out an internet site evaluation in order to get the site approved.

You might want to find pictures too, to use in your presentation.

How to Begin Your Research

  1. Go to our school's homepage and click on HS Library.
  2. Start with our library's online catalogue and look for books.
  3. Then go to the databases and search for relevant articles. Try various search terms. Search at least three library databases before moving on to other sources, including internet.
  4. Use the following internet sites before using any kind search engine to search the internet on your own.
