Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program: 2009-2010
What is the Universal Pre-K program?
A pre-k program funded by New York State for District 4 year
olds.
Who runs the UPK classes?
The UPK program is administered through the Saratoga Springs
City School District by Tom Mele, Assistant Superintendent for
Elementary Education. UPK classes are currently offered by
Saratoga County YMCA and Saratoga County EOC Head Start.
Where are
the class locations and the hours of operation?
- Head Start, 3 Blue Streak Boulevard, Saratoga Springs 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. *
- Head Start, 3180 Bockes Road, Greenfield Center 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
- Head Start, 29 Jefferson Street, Saratoga Springs 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
- YMCA, 290 West Avenue, Saratoga Springs 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
- YMCA, 290 West Avenue, Saratoga Springs 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
- YMCA, 20 Old Gick Road, Saratoga Springs 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
When are the classes held?
The UPK program follows the school calendar, and classes run
Monday through Friday.
Is transportation provided?
No. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent(s), with
the exception of Head Start’s full-day
center-based program. (*)
Who can apply for the Universal Pre-K program?
If you are a Saratoga Springs City
School District resident, your child must be 4-years-old
as of December 1 to be eligible for enrollment in the school
year you are applying for.
How do I sign my child up for this free program?
You must contact Mr. Mele’s office at 583-4474. You will be
asked a series of questions in order for your child’s name to be
added to the District’s mailing list.
If I call right away will I be guaranteed a spot for my child?
No. The District does not have a first-come, first-served
registration list. When you contact the District you are only
adding your contact information to our mailing list.
When will the application be mailed to me?
Once the district has received notification that
New York State has
budget
monies to fund the Universal Pre-K program, applications will be mailed to interested families (sometime in
the spring).
How are children selected?
Student placement will be determined through
the use of a lottery.
How will I be notified that my child was selected
for the program?
The District will mail acceptance/declination letters to all
families who submit a timely application.
