Oct. 23 program on anxiety and OCD offers strategies for helping students

A special presentation on anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder offered by the school district’s Office of Pupil Services on Oct. 23 attracted a motivated audience of more than 30 school psychologists, speech therapists, teachers and administrators.

The guest speaker at the all-day workshop and training session was Dr. Aureen Pinto Wagner, a clinical associate professor of neurology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and director of the Anxiety Wellness Center in Rochester. The title of Dr. Wagner’s presentation was “Anxiety and OCD in School-Aged Children: Early Recognition and Effective Intervention.”

Dr. Wagner provided practical guidelines and interventions to help students cope with worry, perfectionism, school refusal, separation anxiety, social anxiety, performance/test anxiety, obsessions and compulsions.
