A PAINTING WORKSHOP

                        7 weeks                                                Victor Liguori

This course is meant for all levels of experience as well as those with no experience at all.  Students may work in any medium they choose including:  Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor or Pastel.  Students should come to the first class prepared to work, bringing with them the appropriate materials:  paints, brushes, jars, canvas or paper, paper towels, pencil, etc.  For those not sure what to bring, come to the first class with at least a pad and pencil.  The theme of the class will be:  what is a painting, when is a picture a painting and when not?  How important is technique?  How is drawing related to painting?  Why is color essential to painting?  Instruction will be a mix of personal attention and group participation.  The emphasis will be on support and encouragement of individual initiative.  The aim of the course will be the pleasure of learning and the enjoyment of exploring the acquiring of new or renewed skills.

BASKET WEAVING MADE SIMPLE

                        6 weeks                                                Ginny Sword

Learn how easy it is to weave beautiful, useful baskets in this 6 week workshop.  You will weave four practical baskets – a  tissue basket, a candle basket, a pastry carrier basket and a market basket.  Your friends will be amazed at the beautiful and functional baskets you have created.   Materials fee of $75 payable to instructor the first night of class covers all four baskets.  Please bring a plastic pail or bucket, a fabric tape measure, a pencil, scissors (an old pair), 25 pinch clothespins and a small screwdriver, awl or ice pick.    Class size limited to 12.

BEGINNING THREAD PAINTING

Learn how to create images on materials with thread and thread painted objects that can be added to any quilt.  We’ll begin using teacher’s design, then expand to your own artistic creation.  Please bring your own sewing machine which must be able to do free-motion quilting.  See supply list and more information about machine/feet on teacher’s website at www.thequiltedjardin.com.

CALLIGRAPHY

An introduction to the creation of beautiful script lettering with emphasis on Roman, Humanistic, and Chancery Cursive styles.  Media will be in India ink and speedball pen.  Students will be taught basics of layout, spacing and elementary lettering illumination.  Great for invitations, weddings or graduation.  Materials are extra and will be discussed at first class.

DRAWING WORKSHOP

This class will consist of a series of subjects including:  faces, human figures, trees, vegetation, rocks, et al.  Each student will choose to bring in their own subject matter in either photographic form or actual material.  The class is open to all levels of experience and instruction will be geared to the individual with occasional group discussions.,  Media will include ballpoint and felt tip pens, graphite, grease, colored and watercolor pencils.  For the first class bring your choice of black and white newspaper photos of full frontal faces and a 9”x12” Strathmore drawing pad (A.C. Moore is cheapest) as well as some loose white paper, a #2 pencil and a fine point ballpoint pen.

INTRODUCTION TO LOOM KNITTING

Have you always wanted to knit or crochet, but been scared away just at the thought of it?  Were you a knitter when you were younger, but lost the touch?  Then Good News!  You can loom knit!  We knit without needles, on manageable hand held looms.  We make nearly everything a needle knitter can!  Loom knitting has many benefits:  it’s portable and simple to learn.  If you just can’t pick up needle-knitting, if you have arthritis or Parkinson’s and have lost your knitting ability, but still want to produce beautiful hand-knit pieces for friends, family, home or charity…this is the class for you!    Just in time to make those warm hats, scarves, slippers and blankets!    Looms are available for loan ($8) or you may bring your own (available at craft store everywhere:  Knitty Knitters: any size).  Please bring a skein of your favorite yarn and/or yarn will be available for purchase.  We will complete one project in this session.  Class size limited to 12.

KNITTING BASICS

Learn to knit!  Beginners will start with small projects then knit a "mini" sweater.  Welcome to knitters wanting to brush up on their skills, get help with their projects or just come and knit. New knitters bring to class a set of long, straight needles size 10 (not mm) and a skein of light-colored bulky yarn.  (A starter knitting kit will be available for purchase from the instructor if you prefer).  All others, bring your project to the first class.  If you have any questions, call the instructor before class starts.  A text fee of $3.50 will be paid to instructor the first night of class.  Class size limited to 10.

LEARN TO SEW

                        6 weeks                                                Rosalind Hewitt-Moultrie

You’ve begun to sew on your own (or not) and want to know more.  Come learn to sew right, from the start.  Learn to read, cut and sew from a pattern.  In this class, you will make a fashionable tote or handbag that will teach you techniques such as curves, skinny handles, lining, pockets and pleats.  A kit will be provided for you at the first class  It is recommended that you have a sewing kit with long pins, 6” ruler, marking pen, seam ripper and both paper and fabric scissors.  There are sewing machines available for your use, but it is recommended that you bring your own.  A materials fee of $30 will be payable to the instructor the first night of class.  Class size limited to 10.

LOST WAX CASTING

                        6 weeks                                                Matt Balint

Learn the art of lost wax casting.  This course explores the history of lost wax casting and teaches the basic skill necessary to carve in hard wax or sculpt in soft wax.  Your original design is then cast in the metal of your choice (silver, gold, bronze or copper).  There is a casting fee (approximately $10-$20) depending on the size of the piece(s) being cast and the cost of the metal that you select (based on current market value of the metal).  All tools will be provided.  $10 wax & finishing fee payable to the instructor the first night of class.  Class size limited to 12.

QUILTED FABRIC PICTURES

A perfect class for both the beginner and the intermediate quilter.  While this class will focus on techniques for students who are beginning to sew fabric pictures, intermediate level students can work on their individual projects and designs.  Beginners will learn how to make a quilted fabric picture from your imagination or a picture.  You will make a simple picture while learning 4 different sewing techniques and a variety of embellishment and finishing techniques.  For those who have made fabric pictures before, learn how to create shading and depth using different sewing techniques.  Sewing machines are available for use at the school, however, you are encouraged to bring your own.  Beginning sewing ability required.  Prior to first class, please look at teacher’s website www.thequiltedjardin.com for ideas of what fabric pictures can be as well as a list of supplies needed for first class.  Class size limited to 10.

SEWING WITH CONFIDENCE

You have basic sewing skills, but you want to improve and become a better seamstress.  Techniques such as zippers, gathers, sleeves, linings, etc. will be covered.  Make a decorative pillow to start and then the class will focus on your own projects.  There are sewing machines available, but it is recommended that you bring your own.  Bring your own sewing kit consisting of long pins, 6” ruler, marking pen, seam ripper and both paper and fabric scissors.  Class supplies are $15 payable to the instructor the first night of class.  Class size limited to 10.

STAINED GLASS

Create a variety of stained glass ornaments as class projects while developing the skill of a unique craft.  Designed as an introduction for the beginning student, topics will include:  types of glass, glass cutting, soldering, copperfoiling, and pattern designing.  Emphasis will be placed on the tiffany foil technique.  The initial cost for a complete starter kit (including soldering iron) will be approximately $65.  The purchase of additional materials will be discussed at the first class.  Class size limited to 15.

STAINED GLASS CONTINUED

WATERCOLOR VEIL PAINTING

Using primary colors in light veils or washes, we will build up an abstract, unique painting in harmonious color.  After a while, you may see a motif suggested in the overlapping veils and develop it further, with minimal drawing.  This class is open to all levels of experience.  Materials fee of $12 payable to the instructor the first night of class..

DRAWING MADE EASY:  A Three-Step Approach

                        One Night                                             Martha Pearl

Using soft pencil or charcoal, this technique provides an easy entry into drawing for  the beginner, but can also be used by the experienced artist.  This first step is to create an even surface that matches the object we want to represent followed by darkening some areas to create definition, after which we add a few lines to complete the definition of the object.  To keep it simple, we’ll do one object and then add objects to create a “still life” picture.  Materials fee of $4 payable to instructor the night of class.

EARRING  MAKING

Come learn three different beadstringing techniques from the owner of KUMA Beads in Burnt Hills.  This hands-on class will enable you to make three pairs of earrings to take home with you.  This class is a nice extension of skills for those who have taken the Beadstringing class.  However, no prior experience is necessary.  Materials fee of $17.50 (includes tax) will be payable to instructor the night of class.  Class size limited to 12.

RUBBER STAMPING I:  Stamp a STACK of Cards

SPLATTER SCREEN PAINTING

                        One Night                                             Martha Pearl

The instructor will provide equipment for this one night workshop:  a box consisting of a piece of window screen placed over a wooden frame, a small brush, watercolor paints and paper.  The frame is placed over the paper, on which you have arranged leaves and other nature materials in an original design.  Dipping a brush in watercolor and scrubbing the screen, small droplets fall on the paper to create a delicate image.  The resulting picture can be framed, or used to make cards or gift boxes.  This craft project works well for adults, but you may also want to try it with your children at home!  Materials fee of $4 payable to instructor the night of class.

TREASURE BOX

Now that you have made your nature print on heavyweight paper with splatter screen painting, using this paper, we will create a small box using the Origami folding technique.  This sturdy and beautiful little box can be used as a gift box, a keepsake box, or in day to day use to hold any small item.  Box will measure approximately 4”x4” by 1 ¾”.  Time should allow us to complete two boxes in this fun and creative class.  Materials fee of $4 payable to instructor the night of class.

WET-ON-WET WATERCOLOR PAINTING WITH CHILDREN

If you work with or have children aged 6-10, this is the perfect class for you.  We will do four color exercises, beginning with one suited to the youngest and progressing to the oldest.  Wet-on-wet painting gives a fluid color experience that is relaxing and fun;  a rewarding activity to do with your children at home or the children you work with, providing them with an entry into the wondrous world of color.  Materials fee of $4 payable to instructor the night of class.

WET-ON-WET WATERCOLOR PAINTING FOR ADULTS

This class will provide adults with a meditative exploration in the realm of flowing color.  Working on a large sheet of watercolor paper that has been soaked overnight, we will start with an abstract color exercise that is then extended individually into a more complex form.  It can develop a motif or remain abstract.  Each one is unique.  Materials fee of $5 payable to instructor the night of class.
